Legendary Descent: Gaia

Legendary Descent:
In the mythologies of ancient cultures, many gods were notorious for their illicit affairs with mortals. What if these deities and other characters from mythology had actually existed, and their affairs had resulted in a legendary bloodline lasting until today? This series of photomanipulations attempts to portray these hypothetical descendants...



According to Greco-Roman Mythology, Gaia was the first sentient being in existance. The goddess of fertility and the earth, Gaia gave birth to her son and husband Ouranos, god of the sky (those familiar with Greek Mythology will know that it is very often devoid of anything even remotely resembling morals), and the couple became the parents of the infamous Titans...

I decided to put my "descendant" of Gaia in a garden under a shower of falling petals, portraying her as a joyful character vigorously excersizing her control over nature. I originally tried shooting with my model - a fellow theatre student - outside in the sunshine, but we kept getting unwanted shadows from trees, cars and buildings across her body, so we moved into the Drama Studio at uni instead. I would have also liked to have tried a few shots with her wearing gardening gloves, however neither of us could get our hands on (or in! HAHAHAsorry...) a pair of them.
